Sports is about hard work
THE summer vocation is almost over. Everybody is getting ready for the stress of school. I have some special tips here that can help some students make their school years more meaningful.
Last year, I went to Highland High School, a public school in Indiana, for one year as an exchange student. I took part in a lot of activities and joined various clubs and sports teams. The most impressive thing I learned was the passion American teenagers have for sports and how talented they are.
A lot of us think American teenagers are more talented than we are in sports. Actually it is not a talent, but an acquired ability.
In the US, over half of the students participate in sports. A lot of teenagers have played sports since they were in elementary school or even younger. Most of them think that joining a sports team is one of the most important parts of high school life.
Every school has different sports teams such as swimming, tennis, baseball, football, soccer and so on. Everybody has the chance to try out for the various teams. If you are in the team, you have practices after school almost everyday. And you always have matches or tournaments after school or at weekends. In American high school, if you participate in sports, you will be trained as a professional player or swimmer, not just an amateur. They have regional, sectional and national competitions every school year. They endeavor to make improvements everyday and some high school athletes eventually become professionals.
American high school students focus more on sports than we do, that is why people think that they are more "talented" than us, but they just work hard. As an exchange student in the US, I've always been asked, "How can you be so smart," especially in my AP calculus class. But my answer is always "I'm not smart, I just work hard."
So, I want everyone to know that try your best and work on it if you have any goal that you want to achieve in your new school year. Don't just say it, but do it. By the way, don't forget to do some sports when you feel restless. Hope everyone can have an extraordinary September.
