Strategies that save marine life from plastic pollution

THERE are three sources of plastic waste. There are disposable plastic bags for daily use, which are usually discarded after one use; There are recyclable plastic bottles, but no one is paying attention; Factory waste is composed of defective products and waste residue produced by plastic factories.

We came up with the idea of discharging plastic waste into the ocean. In Marine Pollution Bulletin, a recently published study found that the proportion of plastic in the nests of five species of seabirds on Lady Isle in Scotland is as high as 24.5-80 percent, and the proportion of plastic in the nests of European cormorant has reached 80 percent. For example, plastic products in the ocean are easily eaten by fish, and there have been cases of dead fish being found with plastic bags in their stomachs. Other dolphins have died because their mouths got stuck in plastic bottles and they couldn’t feed. Many seabirds landing in the sea can become entangled in plastic ropes and cannot take off again.

I think this situation needs some new methods to solve the problem of marine plastic pollution.

First of all, we should raise the awareness of the audience and let people pay more attention to recycling program. These plastics could have been recycled and used as a big help to solve our energy problem. However, because people’s awareness of recycling is not strong enough, these plastics are often used once and then discarded and sent to waste treatment plants to be treated together with non-recyclable waste. Waste treatment plant for plastic waste treatment is nothing more than which kinds: landfill plastic, burning plastic. These two ways will bring too much pollution to marine species but some people are not aware of them. I think one way is that we can make some documentaries to let people see the damage of plastic waste to marine life.

The second point is to pass legislation to require pollution-free treatment of plastic waste and to urge enterprises to use and produce environmentally friendly products.
