Summertime much more than getting to sleep late

millions of children release a collective groan. Summer is ending. The two-month stretch between June and August is a time most cherished by students, and not just because they can finally sleep past 6am. For many, summer is a time of infinite abundance.

There’s an abundance of travel. After 10 months of hard work, families are all too ready to pack their bags and set off on vacation. Facebook newsfeeds are plastered with pictures of friends jetting all over the world during the summer. Third culture kids living internationally are especially eager to return to their hometowns. I visited my family in New Jersey for two weeks in July, and it was great! As much as I love my home in Shanghai and am glad to be back, I will definitely miss the sweet taste of American food.

There’s an abundance of time. Summer is the perfect opportunity for students to finally accomplish the tasks they simply had no time to complete while still in school. For many, these involve preparing for the new school year. Summer camps are popular; I personally attended an SAT preparatory camp to get ready for the test in fall, and many of my friends attended other camps in areas such as philosophy and calculus. Just because school ended doesn’t mean our education stops. Rather, it marks an opportunity to further pursue our passions at our own pace.

There’s an abundance of family. During the school months, students are focused primarily on balancing their grades and extracurricular activities, leaving only short amounts of time for their families. In the summer, I was able to spend much more quality time with my parents. From engaging in intense sessions of Monopoly to shouting at television contestants, my family gave me a mountain of reasons to regret not spending much time with them before.

The 2013 summer will soon be another fond memory, but lessons learned, relationships strengthened, and laughter shared will stay with us until June rolls around again.
