Tearing down barriers to learning

PART of our motto here at Yew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS) is to align with science and technology. It has been integral to our philosophy for decades.

Now, in this social networking era, websites around the world, such as Facebook and Twitter are proving the entire world is adopting this philosophy.

Although the social networking era has introduced many advantages and benefits for everyday life, it has potential that has not yet been fully implemented or widely used. An example of this would be the use of social networking from an academic perspective. Many schools may be confiscating phones and banning laptops, but at YCIS we aim to embrace the use of these technologies. Information Communication Technology is used in a range of subjects in our school, including English, Mathematics, Science, Design & Technology, and obviously, ICT class. Secondary students are encouraged to bring electronic devices such as laptops and iPads to school, which enhances their learning experience with interaction, as these are more adaptable than textbooks.

Technology has also made it so that boundaries to education - that were once the classroom walls - have been virtually removed. Through the use of the software programs "Moodle" and "Power School," students and teachers at YCIS are able to communicate in the virtual world through text, images and video.

This communication is not solely restricted to our students; parents have instant access to grades for assignments, and can monitor their child's progress with ease, and they, too, have access to the teacher, virtually 24 hours a day.
