Thanksgiving: A kid's perspective

THANKSGIVING is a time of gratitude and appreciation. Yes, some dream only about the palatable turkey being prepared in Mom's kitchen. However, in actuality, the true meaning and purpose of this festival is to value and acknowledge the people who surround us everyday. People like our parents mold, shape and nurture us. For that, we must thank our guardians in every way, shape, and form.

I'm a typical 15-year-old boy who attends Concordia International School Shanghai. The other day, while walking to math, I noticed the elementary school parents accompanying their kids to class. I stopped for a moment, smiled, and admired how the parents sacrificed time and effort to ensure their children's safety and protection. Shortly after, a scene erupted with a red-haired boy, perhaps half my age, complaining to his mom about making a dentist appointment after school. It wasn't a tremendous fight, but it was large enough to catch my attention. The discussion that ensued was an interesting sight to reflect on; we take for granted so much of what our parents give us, and argue at the smallest nuisances.

I'm a believer that everything our parents do is for our own good. Thus, we must show appreciation. We must let our parents know that we thank them for their gift and return it everyday through love and deep affection - and Thanksgiving is the perfect time to do that!
