'The Nerd' Makes for a Riveting Performance

SHANGHAI Community International School's Pudong Upper School drama department has completed another successful and riveting performance, which highlighted the strength of SCIS' fine arts department. This year, they presented an exciting production of "The Nerd" that was enjoyed by parents, faculty and students.

Korky's Cartoon Creativity

Award-winning children's book illustrator Korky Paul visited DUCKS (Dulwich College Kindergarten and Infants School) and the Junior School in late October for four days of fast-paced, fun-filled workshops. Paul is an energetic and interactive illustrator, and children in Years 1 and 2, and all students in Years 3 to 6 enjoyed interactive drawing and reading-aloud workshops with the Zimbabwean-born artist. He demonstrated how to draw the characters from his books to the children using colorful pens and paint, and teaching them that writing, reading and drawing can be immense fun.

South African Dancers Explain Soweto Life

The students of Shanghai Community International School and Hangzhou International School had an eye-opening cultural experience throughout October as South African Gumboot dancers from Kilptown Youth Program gave shows and workshops at each campus. The program is based in Soweto near Johannesburg. The community is one of the country's poorest. Dulwich Under-17's Rugby Victory

The Dulwich College Shanghai's U17 Boys Rugby team won the 2010 ACAMIS U17 rugby tournament.

Competition Spells Success for Word-wise

The Nanxiang House Spelling Bee Competition 2010 took place with students learning as many spellings and definitions as possible. Students had to hunt down words and arrange them in the correct order to make a sentence, unscramble anagrams and make as many words as they could from a muddle of letters.

Racing for Research

Pupils from Yew Chung International School Shanghai and the local community took part in the annual Terry Fox Run to raise funds for cancer research.

Digital Literacy Day

More than 140 parents joined Shanghai American School scholar in residence Dr Jason Ohler for instruction in "Digital Literacy" at the St. Regis Hotel in October. Dr Ohler, a self-proclaimed "digital humanist," focused on lessons in literacy, digital literacy and helping the children tell their story using multi-media presentations.

Music Raises Money

The Tri-M Music Honor Society at Shanghai American School and the Mifan Mama Organization joined forces for an evening of jazz, classical and folk music to raise money for Lao Wang Orphanage in Anhui Province which cares for abandoned children, two-thirds of whom are disabled.

Concert Time at Concordia

Concordia International School Shanghai was fortunate to host the first concert of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland in Chinese mainland. The group is founded on the concept of reaching "concord" and social harmony through music - very fitting for a school with "concord" as part of its name.

Choir in the Community

The WISS Community Choir along with choirs from other international schools in Shanghai recently had the opportunity to sing together with the prestigious Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center in Pudong. It was a wonderful experience and a great way for parents and children at Western International School Shanghai as well as the teachers, to get together within the community through music.



Festival Really is World Class

Concordia International School Shanghai held its first annual PSO International Festival earlier this month. More than 30 booths displaying both special and everyday items unique to pupils' countries of origin were on display for all students from Pre-kindergarten to Grade 12 to get a better understanding of the countries represented by their classmates.

It's All Greek to Us!

Greek culture was all the rage when Year 5 students of Shanghai Rego International School celebrated Greek Day. The day began with an exploration of Greece when Beiny from the secondary campus demonstrated how to make clay cups. To finish the day off all the children competed at javelin, shot put, discus and running in the Rego Olympic Games.

Pool Champ Visits

In early November, Commonwealth Games silver medalist and British swimming team member, Lewis Smith, visited Shanghai Rego International School. He ran a swimming clinic for more than 60 students and taught some of the fundamental swimming stroke techniques.
