Well-rounded education provides me with chance to succeed in life

ALONG with how our parents raise us, a school community can shape and influence us growing children significantly.

At Yew Chung International School of Shanghai, a great focus is given to preparing students for a global future, and to become a global citizen by combining philosophies of both the East and the West. Through the secondary program, YCIS offers first IGCSE and then the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. These programs are not only academically strengthening, but also cultivate an open-mind and a cultured way of thinking. From discussing present-day issues and controversial topics in our Theory of Knowledge course, to participating in student-run charity fundraisers and socials as part of Creativity, Action and Service activities, students become more than just academic achievers at YCIS.

What adds to the educational advantage of YCIS is the focus on developing bilingual language skills, with multicultural understanding. Until the last two years of Secondary School, Chinese is a compulsory subject.

I, myself, am half Chinese, but before moving to YCIS I paid little attention to my Chinese language skills. I spoke with my mother in English, and took beginners Spanish at school. My attitude was, “I may be of Chinese ethnicity, but I’m a ‘third-culture kid,’ so it’s not really important.” This attitude changed drastically after moving to Shanghai.

At YCIS, I began to realize the importance and convenience of language, and I have developed a strong interest in Chinese culture. If language isn’t a student’s forte, YCIS has an excellent performing arts department, and diverse sports teams. The arts and athletics provide interested students with opportunities to experience recreational activities such as ensembles, yearly productions, and division teams. Being a part of the YCIS community makes you not only a well-rounded student, but also helps build a path to the next stage of each students’ life.

Pauline de de Backker is a Year 12 student at YCIS Shanghai.
