YCIS Pudong seeks IB Diploma approval
YEW Chung International School of Shanghai has applied for authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to start the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) at its Pudong campus. The accreditation visit is set for this month.
The IBDP is a rigorous pre-university course of study designed to meet the needs of highly motivated secondary students between the ages of 16 and 19. This comprehensive two-year program provides graduates with a qualification which satisfies the requirements of a number of national educational systems around the world, making it the ideal qualification for global families.
Christopher Connellan, co-principal of YCIS Shanghai Pudong campus, shared his excitement about the step.
"Adding the IB Diploma Program to the Pudong campus is an important step for YCIS Shanghai - it really gives even more students the opportunity to learn through an innovative and supportive system, at a great school," he said.
The IBDP is an internationally accepted qualification for university entry. The program aims to promote international understanding, educate the whole person with an emphasis on intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth, and to develop the capacity to think independently and critically.
If authorized at YCIS Shanghai Pudong campus, IBDP will follow the popular Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Program for 14 to16-year-olds, also offered at YCIS Shanghai.
IBDP courses cover a breadth of knowledge from six subject groups, including the study of literature in the student's first language, second language, individuals and societies, mathematics and computer science, the arts and experimental science.
As an added dimension, students also complete an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) requirements.
YCIS Shanghai Puxi campus has one of the longest running IB Diploma Programs in Shanghai. "We just did our five-year review with the IBO and for all five years our results have been above the world average," said IB Coordinator Daun Yorke.
The Pudong campus is in the final stage of the thorough authorization process, which includes rigorous requirements of both the administration and the subject teachers, and a verification visit by the IBO.
YCIS Shanghai Puxi goes beyond IBDP requirements. Some of the additional activities at YCIS Shanghai Puxi include an IB trip to Thailand, an annual IB Orientation Retreat, and an IB Graduation Art Show.
"The annual trip to Thailand was an educational and cultural adventure that aligns with a core YCIS belief of developing Global Citizens," said year-12 student Natasha Weaser.
"It is definitely the best part of IB, not only because we were all challenged to leave our comfort zones but because we developed a much stronger bond with our peers."
The IB Orientation Retreat on Sun Island gives students in year 12 and 13 the opportunity to further develop a working and learning community together, which is one of the aims of the IBDP. Skits and creative projects mingle with presentations and seminars to make the annual event an important milestonefor IB students.
This year's IB Graduation Art Show featured 13 "super" art students who shared work that they had produced over the past two years in the IB Art Program, at the Red Bridge Gallery in Red Town.
This talented class already has scholarships and placement offers coming in from schools in the US, the UK and Canada. YCIS Shanghai students have won a total of more than US$1.5 million in scholarships in recent years, with three graduates this year receiving support from Savannah College of Art and Design, including the prestigious Francis Larken McCommon Scholarship (US$112,00).
YCIS Shanghai students attend many top universities around the world, including University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, Imperial College, Royal College of Music, Oxford and Cambridge. The chance to attend them, combined with the opportunities and experiences available at YCIS Shanghai and through theIBDP, have generated a lot ofexcitement about the newPudong campus offering.
