YCIS helps green awareness take root
WHEN I moved to Shanghai in 2011, I suddenly understood the importance of the environmental issues we deal with every day. After coming to YCIS, I quickly learned what the words "environment" and "ecology" mean, so my family and I do all we can to care for the Earth.
At our school, we have an Eco Awareness Program, and anyone can participate in many activities. First, we have an Ecology Action Team after-school activity where we do eco-friendly projects, such as making a snake out of bottles and cans to put on the recycling bins as a reminder to other classmates to recycle. We make posters that teach students about the environment and things they can do for it - for example, Earth Hour. We plant vegetable seeds in our school garden. And last year we raised silk worms and got to take them home as our pets for six weeks until they turned into moths. It was interesting because we could feed them different color pastes so that they turned red or green.
We also have a school-wide recycling program. Every week, we collect recycling items from bins that are in every room of the campus and bring them to the school's recycling station, where there is an eco mural on the wall. My partners and I also get to make presentations at student assemblies to tell our classmates how to take action on the global environment problems.
Finally, we have an Environment Week every April, followed by the Treecycling and Green Dress Days when the whole school participates in eco-friendly projects.
YCIS has taught me to think about our environment seriously. To avoid big ecological problems in the future, we have to take action now. Go green!
