Hot tracks for speed demons
WITH the Formula 1 Grand Prix this weekend, Shanghai has cars on its mind — or, to be more precise, particularly fast cars. Formula 1 stars are taking to the pavement in their tricked-out racing cars to whip around tracks at break-neck speeds, with disaster hot on their bumper. But you don’t need to be a professional to satisfy your inner speed demon. Shanghai Daily has hit the streets looking for the city’s hot rod havens and karting clubs.
Shanghai International Circuit
Home to the F1 Grand Prix, this circuit is not for the faint of heart. The main track, where the Grand Prix will be held, is shaped like a “上” (the first Chinese character of the word Shanghai), and has some pretty gnarly twists and turns. Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about chickening out in front of your racing buddies — the International Circuit also has a tourist area, complete with a karting track with a winding professional-grade path of its own. The track comes with two options of cars that require varying levels of bravery: regular and fast. If you’re looking for the most authentic racing experience, this is the place to go.
Address: 2000 Yining Rd
Opening hours: 9am-5:30pm
Price: Regular cars cost 150 yuan per eight minutes. Fast cars cost 400 yuan per eight minutes.
Disc Kart Indoor Karting
Although not a professional track, it is still a great time for all age groups. The track isn’t as intense as the International Circuit, but it still comes with twists and turns where drivers can test their skills. It offers three options of kart, which get some serious speed, although not as much as the International Circuit cars: the slow car, the fast car, and the twin car. Cheaper prices and decreased levels of driving peril make this destination perfect for a friendly competition or a family outing.
Address: 809 Zaoyang Rd, near Changfeng Park
Opening hours: 1pm-1am
Price: Slow cars cost 80 yuan per eight minutes. Fast cars and twin cars cost 110 yuan per eight minutes.
Feyting Club
Head down to the basement of Section C in Bailian Zhonghuan Shopping Mall for more karting adventures in the Feyting Club. Covering 4,500 square meters of ground, the club is one of the largest indoor karting tracks in Asia. Everything here is state-of-the-art: The track dividers are made of impact-absorbing tires, the track itself has a tracking system, and the club provides free helmets to ensure customer safety. Feyting also has multiple tracks, each accommodating between four and seven racers, for increased racing capacity as well as a varied karting experience.
Address: Section C, B1/F, 1288 Zhenguang Rd
Opening hours: 11-2am
Price: 90 yuan (US$14) per five minutes
Shanghai Tianma Circuit
It is the second professional track in Shanghai, where racers can compete in their day-to-day car or a low-rent race car from one of the racing clubs. The track is filled with all sorts of vehicles, from Ford Focus to Ferraris, all cruising around the 14-turn track like bats out of hell. But be careful because visitors are responsible for any damages to their car, be it their family car or a rented car. So if you wreck it, you buy it. If you’re a true speed racer, you can join one of the clubs.
Address: 3000 Shenzhuan Rd
Opening hours: 9am-5pm
Price: With own car: 500 yuan per 25 minutes; If renting car: 1,200 yuan per day; Track member fee: 8,500 yuan per year
