Oktoberfest is on at local German diners and pubs
THOUGH German cuisine may not be as famous as French or Spanish cuisine, it certainly has its own merits of offering wholesome and hearty food washed down by the world’s best beers.
The most popular German dish is perhaps Schweinshaxe, or pork knuckle in English, with its origin in Bavaria. Raw pork knuckles are marinated first and then roasted until the skin turns crisp and the meat tender and succulent. Traditionally, a whole pork knuckle is served with a daub of mustard, fried potatoes and sauerkraut, sour-tasting fermented cabbage. This dish is served in almost every German restaurant in China.
Oktoberfest in Munich is the world’s biggest beer festival, lasting 16 days from mid September, and consumes millions of liters of beer. To celebrate Oktoberfest in Shanghai, locals can go to some genuine German restaurants, hold up a filled jug, say “Prost” and guzzle down the beer, then take a hearty bite of Schweinshaxe.
Haxnbauer
