Savor a taste of Singapore cuisine

ANY mention of Singaporean cuisine should begin with laksa. This spicy noodle soup is normally considered a product of the Peranakan, the Chinese immigrants who came to the British Straits Settlements at the end of the 15th century.

In Shanghai, there are many worshippers of laksa and other Singaporean cuisine, which also enjoys popularity around much of Southeast Asia.

At the following restaurants in Shanghai you can find this quintessential example Singaporean cuisine, as well as other typical Singaporean dishes.



My Dining Place

A selection of fine modern Singapore and Cantonese cuisines and Western comfort foods is offered at this restaurant, treating diners to fresh, healthy and delicious dishes, reminiscent of authentic Singaporean delights.

The laksa is a pleasantly fragrant coconut curry fish broth featuring hard-boiled egg, fish sticks, tofu puffs, cockles and prawns.

Their steamed chicken with soy sauce is also a great choice. It's boiled in a garlic and ginger stock and the meat is served with sliced cucumber, chili sauce with garlic, ginger scallion sauce, smashed ginger and thick, dark soy.

Mo' Laksa

The name says it all at this contemporary little cafe serving the Singaporean curried noodle soup. Also on offer are other Southeast Asian staples such as otak and sambal stir-fried morning glory.

Seven variations of laksa are available, including chicken, prawn, fish ball and lobster. Each is served with a choice of rice noodles, vermicelli or egg noodles, and come either spicy or hot.

Mo' Laksa's large portions costing 58-118 yuan (US$9-18.32) are just that, especially in terms of flavor, and great value.

Orchard CRC Restaurant and Pub

If you're after decent chai tow kway (savory carrot cake), hokkien mee (seafood vermicelli) and chicken rice, head to this venue on Xinzha Road.

The place has a comfortable retro feel, making it an ideal destination to savor a Singapore coffee.

But it's the food that is the real draw, such as the Hainan chicken rice. Deliciously tender chicken is served on a bed of rice and cucumber with a bowl of soup.

The chicken curry is equally satisfying with a rich and creamy gravy and a level of spice that's just right.

Amazing Grace

This relaxed, Southeast Asian-style dining room provides authentic Singaporean food.

On the first floor is the dining area, upstairs is a cozy floor-seating area and an outdoor bar serving Singapore's renowned Tiger beer and BBQ satay.

The Singapore Hainanese chicken rice and the Penang assam laksa are both worth trying, while their tahu telor, deep-fried bean curd topped with shredded cucumber, bean sprouts, chopped peanuts and sweet sauce, is amazing.

Marlin Bay

The newly opened Marlin Bay features some fine Singaporean cuisine among its grand spread of Asian, Cantonese and Western dishes. While its setting among the Cool Docks of the South Bund, might not transport you to Singapore, their tasty treats certainly will.

Located inside Shanghai Yacht Club, the restaurant offers an unmatched ambience of table-side, waterfront dining, and the chance to sample mouth-watering treats from an eclectic menu while sipping a perfectly chilled glass of wine, making it one of the best waterfront dining venues on the Bund.
