FOR 22 days from October 20 to November 10 in 2000, the Second West Lake Expo took place attracting more than 5 million visitors from home and abroad. The expo boasted 23 professional exhibitions with 7,034 booths and more than 2,500 exhibitors from about 30 countries and regions.

The expo displayed a wide range of events including the China International Tea Trade Fair and China International Design and Silk Fair; an electric audio and video equipment exhibition; an electric household appliance and IT product and environmental protection and technology exhibition; China Tourism Trade Fair; the First China Exhibition of Masterworks of Contemporary Arts and Crafts; and Best Residential Environment Expo. There were also exhibitions of cultural relics, inscriptions and calligraphy, urban sculptures, mail products and artworks; exhibitions of leisure and entertainment equipment, automobile and motorcycle, locks, furniture, toys and gifts, and consumer goods from sister cities.

Thanks to the success of the 2000 event, the Hangzhou Government decided to host the West Lake Expo every year.
