Man Asks Zoo Staff To Pay For Their Missing Ferret

A ferret named "Kongkong" went missing from a zoo in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province on April 30. But how it was returned to the zoo has been a controversial topic recently.

The ferret was discovered by a man who carried it safely at his home and attended it with care for three days, West China Metropolitan Daily reported.

However, when the zoo staff wanted  "Kongkong" back, the man asked them to pay 1,000 yuan (US$153.9) to "express their gratitude."

According to the report, the 64-year-old man surnamed Liu found the tamed animal while taking a morning walk around his daughter's home in Sansheng Village.

A passer-by told him it was a ferret worth at least 10,000 yuan. Then he took the ferret home and let it play with his two grandsons.

Liu bought some corns, shrimps, peanuts and even mangoes and fed it three times a day.

When he went back to his own home in Sichuan's Bazhong City, he realized he was unable to find a new home for the ferret. He then called the zoo.

The zoo staff first received his call on May 3. They made sure it was the animal they lost earlier and asked Liu to give it back.

However they called police when asked to pay 1000 yuan.

In the end, the zoo paid Liu 600 yuan to take back "Kongkong" which they said is actually a weasel valued at 1,000-2,000 yuan.

The report sparked a debate online.

Some netizens supported Liu and said the zoo should pay for their own carelessness. Liu took care of the animal for three days, which cost money. The payment is justifiable.

Others thought the fee was unreasonable and commented that Liu should give back the animal to the zoo voluntarily.
