Not long ago, a video of a female driver struggling to reverse her car at a parking space went viral.
In the video, the female gets off her car many times to ensure other cars nearby do not get scratched in northeast China's Changchun City. She is finally able to park in the right position only with the help of another man.
In China, it is widely believed that women have poorer driving skills than men, although statistics prove otherwise. Female drivers cause lot fewer accidents than their male counterparts.
To help the supposedly unskillful female drivers, a highway service area in Zhejiang Province has introduced a parking space targeting women. This female-tailored parking has since lead to a dispute, The Beijing News reported.
According to Pan Tieyong, in charge of parking in the area, they set up 8 female parking spaces out of all the 361 parking spaces under them.
Painted in pink, the specialized parking space is 1.5 times the width of a normal parking space.
Pan said that around 15 female drivers use them every day. Many people find it quite interesting and take photos and selfies with the female parking lot.
Some female drivers are up for the move as it makes parking car easier for them.
Male drivers also admire these well-located and easy-to-be-recognized parking space and view it as a method to attract newcomers as well.
However, some female drivers see it as sexual discrimination. They complain that no one cares about male drivers unskillful at driving. They suggest specialized parking space for newcomers whether male or female.
"We mean no sexual discrimination," Pan said. "Some female drivers asked us to provide with such spaces. If they think they don't need such a service, they can simply park at normal parking spaces."
