Sichuan Woman Offers Tasty Solution To Denmark’s Oyster Crisis

Bian Miaomiao, who moved to live in Denmark with her husband seven years ago from Sichuan Province, offered her own solution to Denmark’s oyster crisis — the invasion of aggressive Pacific oysters — Chengdu Business News reported.

She went to the coast with her family and friends on May 8, equipped with digging tools and a BBQ. They dug about 150-200 kilograms of fresh oysters within four hours. They ate raw, had a BBQ on the spot and brought several barrels full of oysters home as well.

Her parents cooked common Sichuan-style spicy, such as stir-fry oyster, grilled oyster and oyster omelette and invited Bian’s Danish friends to eat. They appreciated it and said they were delicious. Bian said this made her really proud as if she had done her part to help the Danish government out of the crisis.

The Danish Embassy in Beijing shared a report online on April 24 about a plague of giant Pacific oysters that has spread explosively along parts of the Scandinavian coast where they don’t belong. The oysters damage the ecology.

Their intrusion even leads to the endangerment of the Limfjord, a Danish local oyster.

“Fresh oysters are cramming the shore, but Danes aren’t the least bit happy,” the embassy explained in a post on Weibo.“Visit the Danish coast to eat fresh oysters, is it a date?” it added.

The post soon went viral among Chinese netizens.

Quite a lot of China’s internet users said they were ready to cook and devour the unwelcome shellfish after reading the post.“Free up visas and introduce oyster-eater visas, 10 years unlimited re-entry,” said one of the online suggestions. “I’d bet that these oysters would be exterminated in about five years.”

The embassy’s online accounts “were flooded by recipes from Chinese netizens.
