Palace Museum-themed Smartphone Costs Dearly
The Palace Museum in Beijing, also known as the Forbidden City, launched its first smartphone on December 19.
The new phone, jointly released by domestic high-end mobile phone brand 8848 Ti Mobile Phone and the Beijing Forbidden City Culture Communication Co Ltd, was designed especially for the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Inspired by the royal collections at the museum, the phone incorporates imperial elements such as the propitious clouds and dragon. It’s created by famous designer Laurence Xu and will be installed with the museum's apps as well as wallpapers of auspicious patterns.
At a high cost of 19,999 yuan (US$2,878) each, only 999 such limited-edition phones have been manufactured.
There are four colors available -- black, mineral blue, vermilion and bright yellow.
According to media reports, the collaboration aims to promote the traditional Chinese culture in a more diverse way.
The mobile phones are expected to hit the market at the end of January.
