Police Rescue Woman, 1yo Boy, Trapped in Sweltering Car
Police took almost two hours to rescue an elderly woman and a one-year-old boy trapped in a car with the windows up in sweltering 30 degree Celsius temperatures in Jiangxi Province, and the photos of the rescue were widely shared on social media.
The incident happened on April 30, the second day of the May Day holiday, the Jiangnan Metropolis Daily reported.
Traffic police received a report about 11am which said two people were locked in an Audi.
When two policemen arrived at the scene, they saw an elderly woman and a one-year-old boy in the car but the driver missing. As the surface temperature reached 30 degrees Celsius, the two heat-stressed passengers began having trouble breathing.
Police tried to contact the car owner, but the woman who answered the phone said the car wasn't hers and immediately hung up. She even turned the phone off, the report said.
Police tried to smash the window with hammers. But the Audi glass was tough and even several hits did not break through.
Then two relatives of the car passengers arrived and joined in the rescue. About 1pm, the two passengers were finally rescued.
By then, the boy was covered in sweat about unable to speak.
The relatives told police the two passengers were the mother and the son of the driver. After quarreling with her mother on their way from Nanchang to Ji'an for a family outing, the driver locked the car, abandoned it on a highway ramp and left her family alone.
The driver rushed to the scene later, blamed herself for what had happened and thanked police for their efforts.
Traffic police said drivers who illegally park their cars on the highway would be fined 200 yuan and have six points deducted from their licenses.
Around the world, people — especially infants and toddlers — die after being trapped in blazing heat inside cars.
