Porsche At School Sports Meeting Sparks Internet Debate

A video of a red Porsche at the opening ceremony of a sports meeting at an experimental elementary school in Fushun in north China’s Liaoning Province on May 18 has triggered controversy across the Internet.

Web users questioned how a school event become a show of wealth.

The video uploaded on May 22, shows the Porsche moving slowly along the parade on the artificial turf track at the school, carrying a girl in a lavish dress.

As other photos shot at the sports meeting showed, some schoolboys drove toy cars looking like Land Rovers at the admission ceremony. Netizens commented the whole scene was “too luxurious.” Some said the Porsche could damage the track and even posed danger to assembled students.

But some said it was really no big deal as times are changing and one cannot judge such scenes with old-fashioned values.

The school’s executive director said the opening ceremony was arranged and rehearsed by each class while the school authorities were only partly involved.

The local education bureau has circulated a notice criticising the school’s practices and asked the city’s schools to promote hard work and plain living.
