Man Spent 12 Years Carving 3D Version of Classic Masterpiece
A man in Hengyang City of Hunan Province has spent 12 years carving a three-dimensional version of the masterpiece “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” out of a 7-meter-long, 70-centermeter-wide camphorwood piece.
The original painting that extends 5.28 meters was created by Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
The hollowed woodcarving piece, which can be disassembled, features hundreds of human figures with varied facial expressions and almost a thousand objects including camels, horses, towers and houses.
Feng Shuyuan, the 67-year-old, was a retired worker from a tractor plant. He has never learned any professional carpentry skills. He has used abandoned grater, saw and hand-sewing needles as his carving tools.
Feng said the Old Summer Palace in Beijing will be his next goal if someone’s interested in collecting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival.”
