Uni Trumps Unlicensed Food Vendors With Clean Cheap Delicacies

Hot pot malatang, spiced crawfish, pot-stewed fowl, roasted fish, chicken feet with pickled peppers and BBQ ... You may never imagine these cuisines to appear at a campus canteen.

Now, hungry students at Shanghai's Tongji University can have a healthy and economical alternative against eating these delicacies at nearby unlicensed food stalls when the campus canteens are not open.

They can now have cleaner and better food in canteen’s hygienic atmosphere even after the usual dinner time without worrying for sanitation problems or weather conditions.

The university has opened outdoor campus food stalls amid a crackdown on illegal vendors, which has reduced dining options for students.

The campus stalls began operating last Friday and will remain open daily from 7pm to 11pm. These special delicacies are cooked by 20 chefs recruited from the canteens’ pool of 100 cooks.

The university has been famous among Shanghai's colleges for its delicious broiled pork chop for only 2.5 yuan.

Now it has an even broader menu choice for food seekers who study until late night. Crayfish, escargot and chicken feet are just some of nearly 100 dishes on the outdoor campus food menu inside campus. This is much more than what is offered by unlicensed stalls.

The stalls are attracting more than 1,000 students a day, with some waiting up to an hour to get a feel of the popular barbecued dishes and crayfish.

The university has said that it will run the stalls throughout the year, except during holidays.
