A CHILD died and 74 went missing as a ferry carrying 253 passengers sank in waters of Indonesian Riau province this morning, rescuers said.

Rescuer Budi Cahyadi told Xinhua over phone from the scene that178 have been rescued aboard the Dumai Express 10, which sunk at 9:30 local time (0230 GMT).

Another ferry -- Dumai Express 15 -- was stranded 30 minutes before the capsizal of the Dumai Express 10, he said, adding that all the 278 people on board the Dumai Express 15 survived.

"So far, we have evacuated 178 survivors of Dumai Express 10. We also found one body of kid," he said.

High waves and strong winds have hampered rescue efforts, Cahyadi said.

Another local rescuer named only Iwan told Xinhua over phone that the ferry Dumai Express 10 was on route from Batam Island to Dumai ports in Riau province.

"It sank when it arrived in waters off Takengon near Dumai," he said.

The ferry carried 213 adults, 25 children and 15 crewmembers.

"The waves were 4-6 meters high. And the wind blowed strongly," said Iwan.
