1.5-carat meal for man who swallows diamond

SRI Lankan police arrested a Hong Kong tourist suspected of swallowing a 1.5-carat diamond worth US$13,600 yesterday at the island nation's biggest international gem and jewellery exhibition.

Chow Cheng, 32, is believed to have swallowed the diamond as he inspected it at the exhibition, attended by buyers from China, Thailand, India and Europe.

"His intention was to steal it," Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana said. "The X-ray shows the diamond is in his throat."

Suresh Christopher Wijekoon, owner of the exhibition stall, said Chow had tried to switch the original diamond with a synthetic one.

Wijekoon said the man was behaving suspiciously at his stall and when he reached closer to the suspect, the man suddenly swallowed the diamond at his hand before Suresh alerted police at the exhibition venue.

An X-ray proved the diamond was inside Chow's body, said Colombo National Hospital, where he was taken for the test.

Sri Lanka is famed for its blue sapphires and diamonds and its jewellery industry accounted for US$532 million of its export revenue in 2011.
