17 killed in head-on collision in Poland

SEVENTEEN people died in a head-on collision in central Poland today when a passenger van hit a lorry, after swerving into the opposite lane in thick morning fog.

"We have an information that 16 people died at the site of the crash, and 2 other were transported to a hospital, where one more person died," a police spokeswoman told Reuters.

"All we know so far is that a van pulled over the opposite lane and had a head-on crash with a Volvo (lorry)."

She said it was too early to discuss the cause of the accident, which took place near Nowe Miasto nad Pilica, 80 km south of Warsaw.

Poland's Interior Minister Jerzy Miller was heading to the site of the accident, the ministry said in a statement.
