2 Germans jailed in NZ

TWO German men have been sentenced to prison in New Zealand after they admitted travelling to the country to steal and smuggle out rare native lizards.

Dieter Ernst, 56, and Thorsten Richartz, 47, were sentenced on Friday to 4 1/2 months in jail after they pleaded guilty to charges of hunting protected wildlife and possessing four rare native jeweled geckos.

Judge Stephen Coyle told Dunedin District Court it was the longest sentence the men could receive, given their guilty pleas. The maximum sentence for the charge is six months in prison.

Two other Germans were sentenced to prison last year after they were caught trying to smuggle rare native lizards out of New Zealand.

Manfred Walter Bachmann, 55, an engineer who is originally from Uganda, was caught with 13 adult lizards and three young reptiles in Christchurch by Conservation Department inspectors.

Another German man, Hans Kurt Kubus, 58, was sentenced to 14 weeks behind bars and ordered to pay a 5,000 New Zealand dollar (US$3,540) fine after he was caught at Christchurch International Airport with 44 small lizards stuffed into his underwear as he tried to board a flight.
