2 killed as plane crashed in eastern Indonesia

A small aircraft with seven people on board crashed at an airfield in eastern Indonesia's Papua Province this morning, killing two and injured 5 others, local media reported.

The missionary Cessna aircraft, carrying an American pilot, 6 passengers and cargoes, was trying to take off before hitting a bridge and crashed, an airfield officer named Mus told the state-run Antara News Agency.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but Antara said heavy rains and strong winds had been sweeping the region when the aircraft crashed.

The airfield is temporarily closed to the public.
