20 missing as floods sweep away bus
SURGING currents swept away 20 people yesterday on a bus in central Vietnam, including a girl ripped from her mother's arms, while high waters killed 27 others in separate areas as monster Typhoon Megi loomed offshore.
Seventeen others aboard the bus, including the driver, managed to break free and save themselves by swimming or clinging to trees or power poles. They were later rescued by fishermen and police.
One 46-year-old woman survived by treading water against the current, which dragged her 3 kilometers along the Lam River. She swam for about 3 1/2 hours before being rescued, but was forced to let go of her daughter due to exhaustion.
The bus was traveling from Dak Nong to Hanoi when it drove through about 60 centimeters of gushing water and was knocked off balance and yanked from the country's main highway at around 4:30am yesterday.
