22 killed in stampede in N. India

AT least 22 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede that broke out at a railway station in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh's holy town of Allahabad last night, a police official said today.
The death toll could go up as many of the injured admitted to the hospital are said to be serious, he said.
"The stampede took place at Allahabad station when a railing of an overbridge suddenly collapsed, triggering panic among devotees who have been arriving in thousands by train at the town to take a holy dip in the Ganges river on the occassion of a Hindu festival called Maha Kumbh," the official said on condition of anonymity.
Many of the deceased were elderly women while those injured in the stampede have been rushed to hospitals nearby, he said.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed his grief over the incident and asked the Indian Railways Ministry to do the needful.
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, has ordered a probe into the incident.
