25 wounded in Thai prison riot

A total of 20 police officers and 5 defense volunteers were injured when inmates at a provincial prison in the southern province of Narathiwat hurled wood sticks and stones at them today.

The incident started this morning as about 150 joint police, military and civil forces searched for drugs at the first and second floors of the prisoners' dormitory inside the prison to suppress illegal drugs, reports said.

They found 1,000 methamphetamine pills and 20 mobile phones hidden inside the dormitory. Immediately three inmates, angry with the operation, urged other prisoners to act against the searching. The prisoners then began throwing wood sticks and stones, injuring 20 policemen and 5 territory defense volunteers.

Narathiwat governor Thanon Vejkornkanont and the prison commander Suphot Sowanthith rushed to the scene to control the situation.

After hours of negotiation, the inmates finally agreed to stop protesting. No inmate was wounded in the riot.

Thanon ordered a transfer of core leaders of the riot to be detained at Songkhla Remand prison to prevent the riot from occurring again.

There has not yet been a report saying that this incident involving suspected seperatist in the three southernmost provinces, including Narathiwat.
