3 German soldiers killed by Taliban in N. Afghanistan

THREE German soldiers were killed and five others injured in an attack launched by the Taliban yesterday afternoon in northern Afghanistan's Kunduz province, said a German military officer.

Weber, a German military officer with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), told Xinhua that a German patrol was attacked at 15:00 local time near Eisakhel village, Chardarah district.

The German officer who insisted on giving only one name said the clash lasted for around two hours, killing three German soldiers and injuring five others.

He said the Taliban also suffered casualties but could not be confirmed at the moment.

Meanwhile, Mahmad Omar, governor of Kunduz province, while talking to Xinhua confirmed the incident, noting that Mullah Habid, Taliban's local commander in Kunduz province, was killed in the encounter. Taliban has so far made no comment.

Some 4300 German troops were stationed in northern Afghanistan including Kunduz.
