3 emergency department officers killed in Russia's Ingushetia

THREE officers from Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry were killed in a shootout in the turbulent North Caucasus Republic of Ingushetia this morning, news agencies reported.

Unidentified assailants opened fire on the officers' car at 09:16 a.m. Moscow time (0516 GMT) on the Karabulak-Alachuki highway in the republic, Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Two officers were killed on the spot while a third died of gunshot wounds on the way to hospital.

An investigation has been launched, RIA Novosti news agency said, quoting a spokesman for the regional Interior Ministry.

The Kremlin in April formally ended an anti-terrorism operation in Chechnya, which has experienced two bloody separatist wars in the past 15 years.

The North Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan have seen a rise in daily violence in recent months.
