3 shot at Texas college

THREE people, including a suspect, have been shot at a college in the US state of Texas yesterday, as a result of an argument between a student and another man, authorities said.

Both men ended up with gunshot wounds and one of them shot and wounded a maintenance man who was a bystander, TV station KHOU reported.

The shooting happened around 12:30pm at the Lone Star College north campus in north Houston, Texas. Both suspects were in police custody, said the report.

KHOU quoted student Brittany Mobley as saying: "Two dudes basically got into an altercation" and one shot the other.

Basically, I've seen the dude that shot him and as soon as I heard the bullets flying and the gun being fired off, then everyone started running and it was a hint for me to start running as well," Mobley said.

Informed sources said two victims had minor injuries.

One suspect was handcuffed to a stretcher and taken to hospital. A woman was also reportedly taken to the hospital after suffering a possible heart attack, according to the report.

Aerial footage from local television stations showed police cars and ambulances parked on the campus. Emergency personnel could be seen tending to people on stretchers.

The college and nearby schools were put on lockdown while dozens of law officers searched each building for the second suspect.

At around 2:15pm, the suspect turned himself in at Northwest Medical Center with a gunshot wound, KHOU reported, quoting law enforcement sources.

An alert on the college's website called on students, faculty and staff to "take immediate shelter where you are."

The campus was closed for the rest of day, but students and faculty were allowed to return to pick up their cars and other belongings.
