33 deaths linked to cough syrup
AUTHORITIES are investigating cough syrup believed to have killed 33 people in eastern Pakistan in the past three days, an official said yesterday.
The deaths occurred in Gujranwala and surrounding areas. Another 54 people being treated at hospitals are also believed to have consumed the syrup. Those involved are thought to have drunk the syrup to get high, said the official. Tests found a synthetic morphine derivative used in cough syrup in victims stomachs.
