34 drown near Greek island

A boat carrying more than 100 refugees sank off a Greek island yesterday and at least 34 people drowned in what is thought to be the largest recorded death toll from any single accident in Greek waters since the crisis began.

Four babies and 11 young children were among the dead, the Athens News Agency reported, when the boat sank off the southern Aegean island of Farmakonisi.

Another 68 people were plucked alive from the sea while a further 29 managed to swim to safety.

The coastguard is still searching for four children missing after a boat capsized on Saturday off Samos, a Greek island off the Turkish coast.
