35 killed, 110 injured in Indian train collision due to rebel sabotage
THIRTY-FIVE people were killed and 110 injured when a goods train rammed into two coaches of a derailed passenger train at wee hours today in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, after suspected extreme left-wing Naxal rebels sabotaged rail track, said police.
The rebels moved some tracks from the rail causing an express train bound for Mumbai to derail. A speeding goods train from the opposition direction rammed into the coaches, causing heavy casualties, said police.
Indian Railway Minister Mamata Barnerjee, who rushed to the spot, said the priority now is to rescue the passengers. She said trains were easy targets for the rebels.
As many as 50 passengers could still be trapped in the wreckage of the train, according to local TV reports.
TV footages showed disturbing pictures of bloody mutilated parts of human bodies on the track by the side of the overturned Gyaneshwari Express passenger train, which was thrust into by an engine already reduced to complete junks.
