4 confirmed dead in Nevada truck-train collision
AT least four people were killed when a runaway tractor-trailer rig slammed into a passing Amtrak passenger train in western Nevada, authorities said yesterday.
The truck driver, a member of the train crew and at least two passengers onboard were killed when the collision occurred on Friday, according to an Amtrak statement. About 20 others were injured in the crash which occurred at a public crossing on a rural stretch of Highway 95, about 70 miles (112 km) east of Reno, Nevada, authorities said.
The passenger train, which originated in Chicago and headed to the Californian city of Emeryville, rolled almost one mile (1.6 km) past the remote rural desert crossroads in Churchill County, carrying 204 passengers and 14 crew members when the collision happened.
The truck driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, which was hauling two empty gravel trailers.
The driver was trying to stop the truck before the crash, witnesses told authorities.
The gates and warning lights at the crossing were working and the driver attempted to brake before the collision, Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Dan Lopez was quoted by local media as saying.
It will take months before the cause of the accident could be determined, authorities said.
