48 killed, 1118 arrested in Egypt's Friday clashes

Egypt's Interior Ministry said that the death toll of nationwide Islamist demonstrations yesterday rose to 48, while 1,118 supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) were arrested.

In a statement issued late yesterday, the ministry said that the dead included a policeman and a Syrian national, and 436 others were injured during the clashes.

Supporters of the MB and ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi yesterday staged mass rallies to protest against the dispersal operation against their sit-ins in Cairo and Giza on Wednesday.

After the Wednesday operation, which left at least 578 people dead and 4,201 others injured, violent clashes erupted in different parts of Egypt.
