5 Iraqi guards face trial in Baghdad bank robbery
A court spokesman says five members of Iraq's presidential guard will go on trial later this month for their alleged roles in a deadly Baghdad bank robbery.
The five were arrested after the US$7 million heist in July that left eight security guards dead.
Spokesman Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar said today that warrants also have been issued for three other members of the security detail, also implicated in the robbery.
Bayrkdar says the trial of the five is to begin August 23.
Iraq's interior ministry has said the robbery was a rogue act committed by members of the presidential guards and denied speculation the guards were part of a larger conspiracy to use the money to fund insurgents groups.
