588 killed in traffic accidents in Myanmar's Yangon last year

A total of 588 people were killed in over 3,000 traffic accidents in Myanmar's Yangon last year, according to traffic authorities Saturday.

More than 4,200 people were injured in car crashes, of them over 1,200 were female.

Some 1.6 people were killed on average per day last year.

The authorities attributed the traffic accidents to driving without licenses, lack of awareness, drunk driving and incomplete driving training.

The authorities are taking tougher measures against the reckless drivers.

Statistics show that the number of registered vehicles operating in Myanmar stood 4.7 million as of the end of August 2014, of which motorcycles accounted for 4 million.
