6 pupils killed as crane truck crushes into crowd in Japan

SIX elementary school students were killed today in a crane truck accident in Japan's Tochigi Prefecture, local media reported.

The driver of the truck is believed to have crossed the center line and run into a group of children on their way to school in Kanuma, Kyodo News reported. Five boys and a girl were killed in the accident.

The 26-year-old driver was arrested on the spot. No alcohol was detected in the driver, according to local police.

The driver was prone over the steering wheel as if he was hugging it when his vehicle hit the children and came to a halt inside the premises of a nearby house, Kyodo said, citing eyewitnesses.

Police are still investigating the accident.
