67 exposed to radiation in Fukushima
Up to 67 people have been exposed to radiation in Fukushima prefecture following leaks of radioactive substances from the troubled nuclear plant, local media reported today.
The prefectural authorities detected radioactive substances on their shoes and clothes after having conducted radiation checks on 42,440 people at 13 locations in the prefecture, said the reports.
But the dose of radiation was not high enough to pose any threat to their health, they said.
At a press conference today, the Nuclear and Industry Safety Agency said the residents living with 20-30 km radius of Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant do not have to stay indoors when they need to go shopping.
To reduce radiation exposure risks, the residents are advised to travel by car rather than walk in the open air, according to the agency officials.
Meanwhile, they also need to avoid exposing their skin or being caught in the rain while going outdoors, they said.
