7 die, 11 injured in road accident in Cambodia

SEVEN Cambodians were killed on spot and other 11 injured in a road accident yesterday's night in Baray district of Kampong Thom province, some 168km north of Phnom Penh, said the provincial police chief today.

Phan Sophen, police chief of Kampong Thom province said that the accident occurred at 11pm yesterday night as a truck collided with a home-made motorcycle carrying people from participating in a funeral in a nearby pagoda.

"All the victims were in the home-made motorcycle," he said. "Seven are killed on spot, eight in critical condition and three slightly injured."

"Night and fast driving was blamed for the accident," he said. "Also, it's a curving and uphill road."

This is the second worst dead road accident in this month after the tragic car crash on March 4, killing 19 people and seriously injured other eight people in the coastal Preah Sihanouk province.

Road accident in Cambodia is the second largest danger after HIV/AIDS.

Last year, road accident killed 1,709 people in Cambodia.
