7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Chile: CENC

AN earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale jolted central Chile at 6:37am Beijing Time today, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The epicenter, with a depth of 30 km, was initially determined to be at 35.1 degrees south latitude and 71.9 degrees west longitude.
Chilean authorities have ordered for evacuation of people from low-lying coastal areas after the powerful earthquake.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center ruled out a Pacific-wide tsunami but said a quake of this size may generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 km of the epicenter. It advised local authorities to take preventive measures.
