8 killed, 100 missing in landslide in Indonesia

EIGHT people were killed and 100 others missing in landslides in Banjanegara district of Indonesia' s Central Java on Friday evening, officials said here Saturday.

"As many as 8 corpses have been found and 100 others remain missing, they were buried under the houses," Beni Murwansyah, an official from the national disaster management agency, told Xinhua by phone.

Murwansyah said that the search and rescue operation is underway, involving soldiers, police, rescuers from local search and rescue offices, officials from the local disaster agency and volunteers.

Meanwhile, four people were seriously wounded in the disaster who are being treated in a nearby hospital, and 11 others sustained light injuries, the official added.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the agency, told Xinhua via phone that heavy machinery equipments were needed.

Heavy downpours were blamed for the disaster which occurred at about 18:00 p.m. local time on Friday.
