SYRIA said yesterday that a referendum on a new constitution had resulted in 89 percent of eligible voters approving the new document, with 9 percent rejecting it.
Authorities put turnout at 57 percent of eligible voters.
Under the constitution, President Bashar al-Assad will end his two seven-year terms in 2014 at the latest and, with it, his family's 40-odd years of rule.
