9 UN peacekeepers die in Mali ambush
NINE UN peacekeepers were killed in an ambush in northern Mali yesterday, the United Nations said, in the deadliest attack on the force since it was deployed.
The convoy of peacekeepers from Niger was targeted in the northern region of Gao, a UN spokesman said. Other troops were wounded in the attack.
Air support was deployed to secure the area 15 kilometers east of Indelimane.
Men with heavy arms on motorbikes attacked the convoy, said Olivier Salgado, a spokesman for the MINUSMA force.
“This is the deadliest attack MINUSMA has suffered since the beginning of the mission,” added the spokesman.
Last month, a roadside bomb killed five peacekeepers near Kidal. Mines killed five other peacekeepers last month.
Northern Mali fell under control of Tuareg separatists and then al-Qaida-linked extremists in 2012. A French-led intervention scattered them, but some are still active.
