9 killed in foul Vietnam weather

A BOAT carrying foreign tourists sank in the popular scenic site of Halong Bay, killing three, while extreme weather elsewhere in Vietnam left another four dead, disaster officials said yesterday.

The boat sank in heavy winds on Thursday night as it was returning to port with 25 tourists and a crew of seven, said disaster official Doan Van That. Two foreigners, their nationalities not confirmed, and a Vietnamese citizen drowned and another Vietnamese national remains missing.

In the central province of Nghe An, two fishing boats sank on Friday in heavy winds, leaving one man dead and another missing.

Elsewhere in the province, three girls were killed on Friday when a 3-meter brick wall fell on them while they were walking to school.

Flooding in Nghe An swept away and drowned two men who were trying to across a stream Friday.
