Abbas to visit Colombia to seek support on UN bid
COLOMBIAN President Juan Manuel Santos confirmed yesterday that Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas will visit his country next Tuesday to discuss Palestine's bid for UN membership.
"The Palestinian leader had planned to come to Central America and he proposed a visit. We said he would be welcome and he will be here on October 11," Santos said in a statement.
Abbas is scheduled for talks with Santos in Bogota.
Santos said his position remains unchanged that a Palestinian state should only be recognized through a negotiated solution with Israel.
Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin has said earlier that Colombia hopes that Palestine and Israel can heed a call from the United Nations, the European Union, the United States and Russia for peace talks aimed at reaching an agreement in 2012.
Abbas' upcoming tour also include Honduras, the Dominican Republic as well as Portugal, a current member of the UN Security Council.
Colombia, a UN Security Council member, had hinted that it would abstain in any vote on the Palestinians' UN membership.
The UN Security Council's admission committee will meet next week at the expert level on whether or not to approve Palestine's bid for member statehood, council president for September Nawaf Salam told reporters on Friday.
Abbas submitted on Sept. 23 to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon an application for Palestine to be a UN member. The bid must be approved by the Security Council in order to advance to final approval in the UN General Assembly. However, the United States, a permanent member of the council, has indicated that it will veto Palestine's request.
