Afghan hotel under attack, at least 10 killed

AT least 10 people were killed in a multiple suicide bomb attack at a major hotel in the Afghan capital Kabul early Wednesday morning, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Witnesses said that they heard a series of blasts over the course of about two hours, with intermittent bursts of gunfire heard during the late-night attack on the Inter-Continental Hotel, one of two main hotels used by foreigners in Kabul.

All the attackers have been shot dead, agencies reported.

Mohammad Zahir, the head of the Kabul police crime unit, was cited by Reuters saying three police officers had been wounded as they cleared the hotel on the city's western outskirts.

"The clearing of the Inter-Continental is still going on. It's not over yet," Zahir told Reuters.

Three helicopters flew over the roof of the Inter-Continental hotel where some attackers had taken up positions. At least one rocket was fired from the helicopters.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the Associated Press.
