Air crew punished for celebrity karaoke
India鈥檚 Jet Airways has grounded five of its crew members for allowing a Bollywood singer to perform over the in-flight announcement system, an airline spokesman said yesterday, prompting a backlash on social media.
The suspension came after a video showing Sonu Nigam鈥檚 impromptu performance last month went viral, prompting an investigation by authorities.
鈥淎ll cabin crew on the flight have been taken off from flight duty for enquiry and corrective training to reinforce strict adherence to operating procedures,鈥 a Jet Airways spokesman said in a statement.
The video showed the singer crooning to Bollywood songs with other passengers joining in on a chartered flight from the western city of Jodhpur to Mumbai on January 4.
Following its probe, government officials asked the airline to take action against the cabin crew for violating regulations and misusing the in-flight announcement system.
The suspension was trending yesterday with Twitter users lashing out at the authorities.
鈥淣ever knew Sonu Nigam would be such bad music,鈥 user Yashwant Deshmukh tweeted.
鈥淲ah! He made the passengers smile,鈥 wrote Sana Sheikh.
However, many people supported the decision, saying such action could jeopardize safety.
鈥淚鈥檓 glad @jetairways has suspended [its] crew ... It is unacceptable,鈥 tweeted Tehseen Poonawalla.
